Truly original writing exists not in a complete break from everything that has come before but in finding a unique voice: one capable of imbuing commonplace elements with new life and significance. Shakespeare built upon Plutarch; Joyce borrowed from Homer. Today all writers (and most especially screen and script writers) mine the collective pool of pop culture, newspaper headlines and classical reintroduction. Our goal is to help writers apply their unique voice to many of these same shared elements. That’s our job. This should be understood from the outset.
For this reason, we cannot accept any material or proceed with any requested service, unless this process is clearly understood. You are requesting our help in making your story better than it currently is. We are promising to keep your materials confidential, which is not the same thing as having any control over the perceived commonality between the ideas (or even specific details) of your story and those of any other material.
By agreeing to the terms of these services, you are releasing us from any responsibility in this direction. This will allow us to read your material, and help you bring it closer to what you want it to be, without worrying about being sued later because someone else decides to rework Das Boot as a musical. Fair enough?
With all this in mind, please download, print, sign and submit the following release form along with any submission of materials:
Our business is not marketing or selling a writer’s work. Nor is it finding further representation for a client. That is an entirely different avenue of the industry, and one outside of the scope of our responsibility or interest.
What we can promise is that our clients always benefit from the time spent consulting, both specifically within the draft they are working on and more generally as fellow students of the craft. We will help you to discover a better written, more fully realized and ultimately more marketable story and script than what you started with. If this sounds like a goal you share, then by all means proceed.
